When buyers are looking to purchase a timeshare interest one of the questions they ask themselves is “Will I get value for money“. The value proposition is so important to the buyer that when an owner comes to sell timeshare on the secondary market, pricing is the key in most cases.
Buyer perceived value
The buyer will weigh up the options available and compare them to the onsite deal they have been offered. The price will be more competitive than the onsite price, however in some cases the full rights and privileges may not be transferable. These can differ from program to program, and resort to resort, however please find a few examples below: –
- When buying a Marriott Timeshare Resale the Marriott Reward Points program is non transferable. This is the option to transfer your week into the Hotel Rewards Points program. Do not get this confused with the exchange program Interval International. You ARE able to use this when purchasing on the secondary market.
- The Anfi del Mar group of timeshares based in the Canary Islands will not transfer there Anfi Vacation Club program when a resale is transferred. The Anfi Vacation Club is a Points based program that allows exchanges through RCI. You can use an independent exchange network like Dial an Exchange, or purchase a cheap week from Anfi and put all resales that you own at that time into the program.
- One last example is Starwood. If you would like to participate in the StarOptions program you can only buy a resale at the following resorts, Harborside at Atlantis (I and II), Vistana Villages (Bella and Key West phases), Westin Ka’anapali and Westin Ka’anapali North, Westin Kierland Villas and Westin St. John (Hillside phase). These will allow access to the StarOptions program and any other Starwood Resort wont.
Secondary Market Ownership
These are a few examples of the reasons why resale timeshare can be cheaper, however these are not all the reasons. Buyers will consider the the pros and cons of the secondary market and in most cases they can not see the value in buying onsite. The value in buying resale is plan to see. Buy 5 Star luxury vacations and holiday at great destinations worldwide for a fraction of the cost.

When you look through the internet you can always find strange items to buy. One of the strangest is a $1 timeshare resale. It can be very misleading seeing vacation ownership for just a dollar, however this is in most cases just not true.
Sell $1 Timeshare on Ebay
There are many owners looking to Sell Timeshare and over a period of time owners can get dismayed and advertise them on Ebay. When they set up there ad the cheapest way to advertise is to start at a dollar. So there is the first misrepresentation of the $1 timeshare. Just because it has been placed at a dollar doesn’t mean it will sell for a dollar.
Misperception of the $1 Timeshare
One of the most annoying things about the dollar timeshare is that once a potential purchaser finds these $1 timeshares they think that all timeshares should be a dollar. This again is just not true. Depending on location, quality of resort, season and unit view, prices can go upwards to $10′s of thousands even on the resale market.
The truth about the $1 Timeshare
Having said that there are certain resorts and seasons that owners just want to exit from. You will find that these are legacy resorts. Resorts that commonly are completely run by the HOA’s and have no developer onsite to liaise resales. The HOA’s look to collect maintenance fees and are happy for the owners to Sell a Timeshare at a dollar as long as they can keep there revenue stream intact.

I was contacted by a timeshare owner that had attended a presentation with a company in the UK and they asked for some advice regarding a Money Back / Cash Back deal they had been offered to Sell Timeshare that they no longer wanted. I thought that this sounded quite odd so I looked into the offer and the requirements.
Timeshare Presentation
The owner had been contacted by a marketing company out of the blue and was told that they had a buyer for them all they had to do was attend a meeting. They made the appointment and were told to bring there ownership documents and two forms of ID. Upon there arrival they were met by a salesperson named Roger and he proceeded to sit them down and get them a drink.
Sales Pitch
It didn’t take long for them to realise that they were sitting in a sales presentation and there was no buyer for their timeshare week. The salesperson explained that their vacation ownership was pretty worthless and the only way that they could get any return from there ownership was to buy a cash back product along with a holiday club package.
Promised Money Back
As you can imagine the story they were given was unbelievable and if they parted with £15000 today they would get a cash back cheque for £35000 that they could claim in 51 months time. Luckily for the owners that contacted me they didn’t go ahead, however I have heard from many owners now that entered into this agreement and of course never received any money back, and in most cases the company that was going to pay them the cash back no longer exists.

We hope that the information provided above helps anyone who may have been contacted by a company like this and if you are looking to Sell a Timeshare please do not hesitate to contact us.
No Cold Calling from Timeshare Companies
Over the years I have spoken to many timeshare owners who have been cold called by what they believe is a resale company. Firstly if you are looking to Sell a Timeshare and get a call from a company who you did not contact at some point, DO NOT listen to them just put the phone down. There are many companies that come and go in the industry and they are definitely not timeshare resale companies.
I want to Sell my Timeshare
You will recognise these companies very easily from legitimate companies with the promises they make when speaking to you.
- One of there ploys is to call owners and say they have a buyer waiting for there timeshare for an unrealistic price. Many owners fall for this ploy as they are searching for there initial investment back and the company knows this.
- Another conversation you may have had on the telephone is that the company that has called you has buyers from Russia for example and they proceed to tell you that they are paying more than any other buyer, however you have to pay upfront for something.
- You also may of heard from companies that say they have a buyer and need a fee for some solicitors costs. This is also NOT TRUE either! You do not need to pay any solicitor costs upfront if they genuinely have a buyer waiting.
- One of the newer stories you may hear is that you have to buy a holiday club or pack before they can help you exit your ownership. This again is another ploy to take money upfront and you will still own your timeshare week or points.
We hope that the information provided above helps owners understand the pitfalls out there when looking to Sell Timeshare, and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact for more advice.
There have been many comments made on websites with regards to advertising timeshares and vacation ownerships for sale. I believe the misconception by a lot of owners is that once an ad is placed the timeshare is sold.
Sell a Timeshare On-line
I think i would like to set the record straight. Once an owner has said to themselves “How do I Sell my Timeshare“, then subsequently found someone to use on the internet, they need to make sure that the company will do what they say. Below are a few points that we believe are extremely important.
- Just because you found a company while looking to sell your shared ownership does not necessarily mean they attract buyers.
- Browse the internet as if you were looking to buy the property that you own and see if that company then appears in the search records.
- Many companies just optimise their websites to attract sellers and take large amounts of money, thousands if possible and then never follow through.
- When you have a company that drives buyers to your property make sure that you list it at a resale value, don’t over price.
- Far to many companies over price secondary market timeshares and they sit on websites that attract buyers, however they do not get any enquiries.
- If the companies say you are going to definitely sell at a certain price and within a certain time frame be wary no one can predict the future.
- Be patient and let the advert have time to generate potential buyers.
- When you have an offer think seriously about taking it, even if its less than you expected. The advert has obviously done its job.
If you want to Sell Timeshare its possible. Do your due diligence, read through the terms and conditions, which should be provided on their website if you are advertising through an on-line platform. Stay positive and contact the marketeer every once in a while to get an update. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

I have spoken to many people that have been looking to Sell a Timeshare for quite a while with no joy. There could be many reasons for this, however if you feel that you have tried everything possible then maybe donating your timeshare for free to a charity, or even a friend or college maybe an option that you should look into.
Donating Vacation Ownership
Donating a timeshare or vacation ownership to charity is possible but not all destinations and programs will qualify for this program. If you have a property that qualifies you will find that the only cost to you the owner will be the closing costs to transfer the ownership to the charity in question.
Ownership Liabilities and Obligations
Alternatively if you have a friend or family member who is prepared to commit to the rights and privileges, liabilities and obligations of your ownership contact a reliable transferor of timeshare interests, or a good closing company that guarantees to transfer the title free of all liens and encumbrances.
